Job Summary
The Communications Writer and Content Specialist is responsible for creating content for internal and external communities along department-specific and schoolwide projects and initiatives. Within the department, the Specialist will be responsible for writing for and editing the annual publications; supporting departments and Leadership Team members to develop content and collateral; and creating news content for the website and social media. The person in this role will support community outreach communications and events and will also support specific departmental initiatives and all community events for current and prospective families by creating and producing collateral. The Director should be able to assign large and small projects to the person in this role and anticipate that they will be completed independently and on schedule. This person in this role will also support the Director by establishing professional and positive relationships within the department, school community, and the City of Palo Alto.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Outstanding writing skills - for publications, website, letters, and programs
Experience, awareness, and capacity to create content to support DEIJ programming
Ability to create, review, revise, and update Website content with a consistent voice and attention to brand
Support high-priority messaging - project updates, mission-driven initiatives
Prior experience with social media support, review, brainstorm, secure permissions
Ability to manage School Public Relations- create and handle media for programs and speakers
Create content for and support internal weekly newsletter, division head and deans communications
Participate in Community Outreach events (such as Fun Run, May Fete Parade)
Support team to achieve departmental and institutional goals
Requirements
Must be curious, collaborative, detail-oriented, community-oriented, and proactive
Have proven excellent copy-editing skills
3 or more years of experience as a writer, journalist, educator, or marketing copywriter with a portfolio/recent examples of mid-and-long-form content
Solid understanding of what it means to write for digital channels: blending user experience and storytelling, and how they fit into the bigger picture
Self-starter with the ability to meet deadlines, and drive projects forward – while being open and comfortable to iteration and feedback.
Bachelors in Communication or other relevant field or like experience
