Harvard-Westlake School is seeking an Admission Counselor for the 2022-23 School Year. This friendly, warm, and energetic employee will be an integral member of the Admission Office and reports to the Interim Head of Admission and Enrollment. Working full time with a dynamic and collaborative Admission Office, the Admission Counselor will be an essential part of the day to day operations of the office as we support over 2000 families throughout the admission process. This position serves as a highly visible member of the team representing the school community. This person will work closely with prospective families as an interviewer, partnering to steward and manage our Student Ambassador program, will serve as an application reader, and will work closely with fellow faculty and staff throughout the Harvard-Westlake community. This is a one-year assignment from July 1, 2022- June 30, 2023.
Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as one of Harvard-Westlake’s strongest advocates and ambassadors, promoting the School to various constituents. Articulates the School’s mission in advancing the School to families, elementary schools, outreach programs, and other professional organizations.
- With the Admission team, provides warm and welcoming customer service for all prospective families throughout the process.
- With the Admission team, plans and attends events including, the Family Visiting Days, Admission Coffees, Information Nights, evening events for prospective families, off-campus outreach efforts, and other activities involving recruitment and outreach.
- Interviews approximately 100 prospective students and families
- Reads and Evaluates approximately 200 applications for admission
- Supports managing the Student Ambassador Program (currently, 500+ student volunteers) who serve as tour guides, panelists, and student representatives to our visitors.
- Serves as primary contact for ISEE test administration and processing of score reports
- Supports institutional outreach to new schools, assists with access efforts, and attends school visits and fairs, as assigned.
- Answer admission phone and email as needed to assist Admission Administrator and Admission Assistant when volume is high; assist with transcript and recommendation processing when volume is high
- Collaborates to determine trends, analyze data, plan programs as they relate to demographic realities of Los Angeles to introduce Harvard-Westlake to communities unfamiliar with the School.
- Other duties as needed and assigned as part of the Admission Office.
Ideal Candidate will have:
- Experience in admission, recruitment, or public facing customer service with multiple stakeholder groups; school admissions; diversity, equity, and inclusion; student advocacy; and/or community outreach is a plus.
- Friendly, positive, and professional manner.
- Experience with middle/high school age students.
- 2+ years of experience in a professional setting.
- Flexibility and capability of working well within a department and within smaller team settings.
- Previous knowledge of, or experience with, Los Angeles-based primary and secondary educational environments, and community-based organizations is preferred.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Exhibit ability to convey concepts and ideas in a clear and concise manner to students and adults.
- Be enthusiastic about becoming part of our vibrant school community, interacting with prospective and current families, students, and colleagues inside and outside of the classroom.
- Discretion and a sensitivity to confidential matters.
- Ability to work after hours, weekends, and admission -related events outside of the school day.
- Bilingual abilities a plus.
