Reports To Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications
Summary The Advancement Communications Manager will develop and manage communications for the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations in support of a philanthropy and engagement program that includes an ongoing major gifts program, annual giving, donor relations, volunteer management, and events. This position will serve as the primary gatekeeper for messaging and content originating in the Advancement Office. It will report to the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications but work closely with the Advancement team to serve the greater school community and to support Mercersburg’s mission through integrated marketing, brand management and content creation.
Responsibilities and Duties
Develop a donor-centered communication plan that will establish and strengthen relationships between the school and its alumni, parents, students, and other constituents.
Provide writing, editing, design direction, and project management for Advancement print and digital collateral, including solicitations, gift proposals, case statements, stewardship communications, newsletters, and event invitations.
Develop the marketing plans for major alumni and parent events and programs.
Review projects early in development, checking in as projects move along, and reviewing all collateral to make sure the content, messaging, and appearance are on brand.
Manage the advancement and alumni relations communications budget and external communications calendar.
Work closely with other members of the Marketing and Communications team to ensure that philanthropy messages are appropriately woven into broader school communications and to drive and develop fundraising communications.
Develop and maintain a collection of stories for solicitations, publications, and stewardship. Schedule and conduct personal interviews with constituents as necessary.
Create template proposals and briefing documents and craft remarks for volunteer and staff leadership, as requested.
Develop and manage the alumni and giving pages of Mercersburg’s website.
Develop and schedule content for the official Mercersburg alumni social media channels.
Meet regularly with the Advancement directors to ensure projects are on track and to help troubleshoot, provide feedback, and approve projects.
Meet periodically with the Chief Advancement Officer to review upcoming projects, provide feedback, and discuss new strategies.
Collaborate with outside photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and other vendors as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The ability to think critically and strategically and to show attention to detail.
Exceptional project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects/timelines from different groups at the same time.
Must be a skilled writer and copy editor with experience reviewing both digital and print collateral.
Experience and expertise in web and social media communications and a content management system.
Knowledge of basic design principles; comfort working in a system like Photoshop, Canva, or InDesign is a plus.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the flexibility to respond quickly and appropriately to institutional needs.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
Three years of experience in communications, preferably with an emphasis on advancement/development or on constituent relations; additional years of experience preferred.
Experience in an independent school, college, university, or nonprofit setting is preferred.
