Urban School of San Francisco seeks a full-time (12-month), resourceful, self-motivated and hands-on professional to serve as Assistant Director of Communications. Urban is a leading independent high school in the Bay Area with a national reputation for its innovative approach to education. The Assistant Director of Communications is an integral part of the school’s marketing team, responsible for collaborating with and supporting the Director of Marketing & Communications to articulate Urban’s brand to a broad range of school community constituents.
Proven project management skills and advanced writing/editing/ creative expertise across multiple mediums, including digital, social media and traditional print, as well as visual storytelling photography/video are required to succeed in this role. The ideal candidate is a highly organized person with strong interpersonal, time management and decision-making skills, but willing to listen and learn in order to thrive in a dynamic environment full of bright high school kids, extraordinary teachers and talented staff members. Contribute high quality written content to all school communications projects. Ensure all writing meets Urban’s content objectives, follows school guidelines, and is accurate and error-free.
Content development and oversight of the school’s website; track user analytics and help create ideas for future web-based content.
Manage Urban’s social media presence, including content development; develop annual social media plan.
Responsible for drafting and designing the weekly parent/guardian/community e-newsletter.
Direct communications and emails to all constituents, including parents/guardians, trustees, faculty/staff and more.
Participate in developing marketing materials, both print and digital collateral, newsletters with various departments in the school including Admissions, Development, Athletics, etc.
Document school events, athletics and school life via photography and video to convey effective stories and capture key campus events. Support all departments within the school around events and initiatives.
Collaborate on media relations opportunities. Develop story ideas and content.
Some evening and weekend assignments.
Other duties as required.
Strong writer, advanced proficiency and a creative approach in all aspects of communications.
Competence on a wide range of basic office software; previous use of website CMS helpful.
Understand key social media platforms, how they work and what audiences they serve.
Proficient use of cameras, video equipment, etc.
Work well under pressure in a deadline-sensitive, multi-tasking environment. Active collaborator and contributor to a team, but with the confidence to work independently, efficiently and proactively.
5-7 years of demonstrated experience in an independent school or non-profit organization desirable. Applicants from agency or corporate backgrounds wanting to move into a non-profit are welcome to apply. BA degree in English, Communications, Marketing, Journalism or other relevant discipline.
