The Assistant Director of Communications is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Director of Communications. The person in this role must display initiative and be a creative thinker with the ability to leverage various modes of communication to tell the Potomac story. This position works closely with the Director of Communications, the Director of Web Services, colleagues in the Advancement Office, and faculty and staff from across campus to contribute to projects that communicate Potomac news and information to internal and external constituents and support the school’s mission and strategic goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Take an interest in, and seek out opportunities to capture, daily life at Potomac; assist in identifying newsworthy developments and determining appropriate dissemination strategies
Write, edit, and proofread content for various print and digital publications, social media, and the school’s website, conducting interviews and performing research as needed
Coordinate content and production of Potomac’s weekly e-newsletter
Manage the school’s official social media channels, maintaining a flow of appropriate posts about Potomac people, programs, and events
Work with offices around campus that have separate social media sites, to coordinate efforts and ensure overall consistency in messaging
Capture, edit, and produce creative video and photo content from concept to publication, bringing Potomac stories to life
Follow best practices in asset management and organization of video and photographic content
Support the preparation of Potomac’s alumni magazine, contributing content for each issue and keeping the production on schedule
Prepare and disseminate press releases
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, or a similar field; master’s degree preferred
At least five (5) years’ related professional experience, preferably in an educational setting
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Effective listening and oral communication skills
Exceptional attention to detail
Experience managing social media platforms and an understanding of social media metrics
Photography and videography skills required; basic graphic design skills preferred
Technological literacy; familiarity with the following tools is highly preferred: Finalsite CMS, Final Cut or iMovie, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.), and Microsoft Office Suite
Intermediate- to advanced-level experience with digital cameras, as well as microphones, lighting, and other audio/visual equipment
Team orientation and ability to work effectively under deadlines, juggle multiple assignments, and maintain a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends as required
