Founded in 1893, Mercersburg Academy is a dynamic, forward-thinking, independent, coeducational secondary school with a strong tradition of devoting the necessary resources to attract and retain the best students and faculty, and to develop and maintain first-class facilities. Mercersburg is located in historic south-central Pennsylvania, approximately 90 miles northwest of Washington and Baltimore. The Academy enrolls 435 boarding and day students (85 percent boarding) in grades nine through twelve and a post-graduate year, hailing from 30 U.S. states and 40 nations.
The position assists with all aspects of the admission and recruitment process and has an interest in working in an independent boarding school environment. Admission officers are members of the admission and financial aid committees and report directly to the Director of Admission. The office is comprised of six admission officers and three administrative staff. Support is also provided by the four members of the regional engagement team.
Responsibilities and Duties:
In collaboration with the entire team, develop, execute, and evaluate the vision for recruitment of students for the school including goal-setting and attainment.
Identify trends in independent school demographics and collaborate with internal departments and external consultants to create long and short term recruitment strategies.
Effectively communicate and build relationships with prospective families, feeder schools, educational consultants, international agents, etc.
Participate in all facets and phases of the enrollment process, including fielding inquiry calls, conducting on/off-campus candidate interviews, and traveling domestically and internationally.
Responsible for managing the inquiry to enrollment process. As a member of the admission committee, read applications and make admission decision recommendations.
Exercise a working knowledge of the strategic relationship between the roles of admission, marketing, and financial aid while achieving enrollment and retention objectives.
Admission officers are members of the faculty and will have residential and athletic or extracurricular duties included in their position descriptions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General understanding of standardized testing and different academic environments.
Interpersonal skills, organization, strong work ethic, and willingness to work within a boarding school schedule, including some weekends and evenings, are vital to the success of working at Mercersburg Academy.
Possess strong communication skills, an enthusiasm for working with young people, a desire to travel domestically and internationally, and an ability to connect with a diverse group of students and families.
Three years of experience in independent school or higher education admission work
The energy and ability to travel overnight, both domestically and internationally. Flexibility to work weekends, early mornings and evenings at various campus events.
Must have a working knowledge of databases, preferably Veracross, and a strong level of comfort with spreadsheets and data analysis.
