The Buckley School, Los Angeles’ oldest K-12 coeducational learning institution, has an opening for a Communications Associate. The Communications Associate reports to the Director of Communications and serves as an internal beat reporter, editor and publisher, discovering, covering and disseminating news from all areas of our school. This individual also The Communications Associate works with the Director of Communications on projects to support the admissions and fundraising departments. This individual is also responsible for maintaining the website and all its functions, including writing and sending emails, designing and updating both the public-facing site and the back-end, and working with all members of the school community – parents, faculty, staff, and students – to keep our web presence current, relevant, and dynamic.” This is a terrific opportunity for a self-starter interested in gaining experience across communications and non-profit functions and working with faculty, admissions and development (Alumni Relations, Annual Fund and Capital Campaign) team members.
Responsibilities include the following
Oversees day-to-day content management and design of website.
Solicits, creates, edits, and publishes key web content (e.g. calendar events, news, blog posts, events, resource boards, forms, photos, and media galleries) that is timely, accurate, relevant, and that adheres to the school’s editorial style and visual identity.
Analyzes user feedback, SEO, click rates, etc.
Acts as the liaison to Whipple Hill trouble-shooting technical issues, establishing new features, building out special pages
Working with faculty, staff, parents, and students, creates, edits and distributes division-specific weekly emails every Friday.
Writes, edits, and distributes broadcast emails, working with faculty and staff members as appropriate and necessary.
Creates email lists, both dynamic and static.
Collaborates with IT in analyzing email infrastructure and recommending appropriate adjustments and upgrades.
Work with the Technology Department to ensure that all members of the parent community receive all emails
Oversees day-to-day content management of all The Buckley School social media channels.
Continually reassesses efficacy of all social media – acquiring new platforms and boosting posts when appropriate/needed.
Follows rubric for content of all social media, including adherence to the Buckley Style Guide and other established parameters.
Working with the Director of Communications, builds and implements strategic use of social media for campaigns, events, and other objectives.
Develops and follows an editorial calendar for social media, in consultation with the Director of Communications.
Provide support, guidance, and training to community-wide sponsored social media channels in establishing a cohesive brand and feel (e.g., Buckley PA, Varsity Club, Buckley Cares).
Metrics and Analysis
Develops analytical framework for social media and email and provides regular report to Director of Communications and other managerial stakeholders.
Collects data on open rates, clicks, advertising effectiveness, admission surveys, and other feedback from external and internal communities to present to Director of Communications.
Monitors the school’s web presence across social media platforms, databases and other online listings.
Makes recommendations for Buckley’s external presence and brand integrity.
Develops multimedia content for presentations, meetings, and other institutional needs.
Oversees design and printing of printed materials across campus.
Works with Advancement team on designing and distributing fundraising materials and invitations, as necessary
Takes photos at school events, headshots, classroom activities, etc.
Serves as unofficial campus photographer (e.g., events, headshots, day-to-day activities).
Maintains digital photography archive.
Events and After-Hours
Attends Buckley advancement and admission events on and off-campus during the weekends (Open Houses, street fairs, etc.) in a support role, helping to coordinate and organize everything from set-up to clean-up, if necessary.
Reachable and available evenings and weekends if needed, to respond to emails, participate in phone calls, make adjustments to the website, or send emergency emails.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Demonstrated experience maintaining and building web pages using a Content Management System (knowledge of Whipple Hill preferred but not necessary).
Proven success in working strategically with social media.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations, including students, parents, and faculty.
Familiarity with HTML, SEO, and database management.
Strong editorial, writing, and proofreading skills.
Outstanding attention to detail.
An understanding of metrics, analytics, and tools to measure the effectiveness of online initiatives.
Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a timely manner.
Ability to prepare and design multimedia assets (photo, video, audio) for the web. Familiarity with PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and video editing software (e.g. FinalCut Pro, Adobe Premiere, iMovie).
A keen interest in exploring new and old technologies in the continual evaluation of the most appropriate and effective communication strategies.
An enthusiasm for staying educated about best practices in the use of technologies at independent schools.
Superb creative and organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative environment.
Proficient in the use of a digital camera.
Independent school or higher education experience preferred.
