The Director of Communications is responsible for all aspects of San Diego French American School (“SDFAS”, a preK-8 dual language immersion school)’s internal and external communications efforts, including website development and maintenance, social media, newsletters, handbooks, press releases, advertisements, publications, photography, videography and other related tasks and domains. The Director of Communications reports to the Director of Enrollment Management and Marketing and him or herself works closely with the school’s Graphic Designer and website consultants. The Director of Communications also collaborates closely with many other departments within the school including Development, Outreach, Enrichment, and the Academic Divisions. The Director is responsible for the implementation of the school’s year-round communications strategy.
The Director of Communications plays a vital role at SDFAS, exercising professional judgment and acting as a gatekeeper for what does and doesn’t get communicated, when and how, all in support of the school’s philosophy, mission, marketing and communications objectives as established by the Senior Leadership Team and shared with the Director of Communications. It is the job of the Director of Communications to ensure quality communications work product within a developed and strategic communications plan that is efficient and effective in serving all constituencies both internal and external. The Director of Communications is responsible for all publications (print and electronic), ensuring a well defined school image and message consistency, and paying particular attention to website, social media and brand identity programs.
Duties and responsibilities:
Oversees the planning, design and production of all school publications, including parent-student handbook, employee handbook and operations manual, event invitations, and material related to recurring and special programs or events.
Manages media relations, including writing press releases, getting them published, and cultivating and maintaining relations with local media.
Oversees the content management and updates of the school website, seeking to make it evermore dynamic with more and more images and short videos, regularly refreshed, and less text.
Tracks SDFAS’ online presence and reviews on the Internet.
Produces advertisements for admissions purposes and auxiliary programs.
Enlists faculty, staff, alumni, parents and others to produce articles and provide updates for publications in support their work (newsletters, blogs, etc).
ALWAYS ensures appropriate review of draft publications prior to going to press.
Ensures that all marketing materials, publications, online presence, etc., properly support and reflect SDFAS style guide, mission, and strategic goals.
Regularly attends school assemblies (“forums”) and special events (Winter Show, Grandparent’s Day, etc.) to take photos and video to be used in publications, webpage, marketing materials, and social media
Manages the school’s online social media presence regularly updating with photos, short video and short remarks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, etc.)
Conducts video interviews with faculty, staff, parents, students, alumni and alumni parents for use on the webpage and in marketing materials
In coordination with the Alumni Coordinator and Director of Enrollment Management and Marketing, designs and conducts surveys of alumni and uses comments on website and as part of marketing materials
Organizes and ensures, personally if necessary, dynamic presence at all important local events at which the school has traditionally or might want to establish a presence, such as but not limited to Farmer’s Market in La Jolla, FallFest at La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Christmas Parade, etc. as well as P.A. events such as Back-to-School Picnic, Halloween, Marché de Noël, Talent Show, Kermesse, etc. (always taking photos and video for communications use of course !)
Leadership Team Support
Works closely on strategy, policy and systems design with the Director of Enrollment Management and Marketing
Participates as an active member of the administration and attends the all-administrative monthly meeting.
Extends himself/herself beyond the responsibilities of a job description and assists the Director of Enrollment Management and Marketing (Director of Development, Director of Outreach Programs, Enrichment Programs Manager, or Head of School) with all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and required experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate field related to area of assignment (Master’s Degree preferred)
Three to five years of communications or publishing experience; or, any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Bilingual English-French with superior oral and written skills in both languages
Prior experience in an international or French-American school setting preferred.
Strong commitment to independent school education and a particular enthusiasm for bilingual/international education.
Superior interpersonal, organizational and managerial skills.
Comfort with digital publishing and website technologies.
Demonstrated understanding of the SDFAS’s mission and values.
Ability to maintain an effective and positive working relationship with administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students, school and community organizations and the general public.
Proven team leader.
Decisiveness and good judgment in situations requiring the evaluation of information in order to reach creative solutions.
High level of independent decision making along with the ability to maintain the confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information.
